These locks create planned obsolescence, harm the environment by forcing users to buy new devices, and stifle innovation by shutting out independent developers and alternative operating systems.
Combats Planned Obsolescence: When manufacturers stop providing software updates, devices become insecure. Open bootloaders allow users to install other operating systems, safely extending the hardware's usable life.
Drastically Reduces E-Waste: Millions of physically functional phones and tablets are discarded annually simply because their software is outdated. Decoupling hardware from the original vendor's OS keeps toxic materials out of landfills.
Promotes European Tech Innovation: EU software developers cannot successfully launch alternative operating systems if US and Asian hardware giants use locked bootloaders and strict attestations to block their installation on consumer devices.
Protects Access to Essential Services: As banking, government ID, and payment apps increasingly rely on hardware attestations (like Google Play Integrity), an open standard is required to ensure citizens aren't forced to use specific corporate operating systems just to participate in daily life.
True Digital Ownership: If you cannot modify the foundational software of a device you purchased, you are merely renting it. Open bootloaders restore traditional property rights to the digital age.
The Right to Repair (Software): The Right to Repair movement currently focuses heavily on hardware. Open bootloaders expand this to software, allowing users to "fix" abandoned or bloated operating systems themselves.
We are preparing an official European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) to demand binding EU legislation guaranteeing bootloader unlocking and software freedom on all consumer devices.
